Post-Operative Instructions

What should I expect after my root canal?

Your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue may feel tender for a period of time following treatment. This sensitivity is a normal response to both the condition that brought you to our office and the root canal therapy itself. Some discomfort is expected and is part of the body’s healing process.

Post-Operative Care Instructions

To promote healing and avoid complications after your root canal treatment, please follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid eating until the numbness from anesthesia has completely worn off to prevent accidental injury to your tongue, cheeks, or lips.
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed to manage discomfort and prevent infection.
  • Chew carefully on the treated tooth, and avoid hard or sticky foods until the tooth has been permanently restored with a crown.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing as you normally would, being gentle around the treated area.
  • Contact our office if you experience any of the following:
    • Moderate to severe swelling
    • Pain that feels unusual or is not controlled by medication
    • A bite that feels high or uneven
  • Follow up with your general dentist to have the final restoration or crown placed on the treated tooth. This is a critical step to protect the tooth and ensure long-term success of the treatment.
